Are Handmade Ceramic Mugs Food-Safe?

If you have ever hesitated over a beautiful handmade mug and wondered whether it is actually safe to drink from every day, you are asking exactly the right question. Safety is the most common concern people have about handmade ceramics, and there is a lot of confusing information out there. Here is a clear, honest answer.

Are handmade ceramic mugs food-safe?

A handmade ceramic mug is food-safe when it is finished with a food-safe glaze and fired correctly. The clay body itself is inert. What matters is the glaze, the glassy coating on the surface, because that is what your drink actually touches.

Every piece at Crafted Ceramix uses food-safe glazes and is made to be used daily, for chai, coffee, water, curd, anything you like. That is the standard we hold across mugs, bowls and plates.

What does "lead-free" and "cadmium-free" really mean?

Lead and cadmium are the two ingredients that historically made some glazes risky, especially older or imported decorative pieces. They were used to brighten colours and lower firing temperatures, but they can leach into food and drink, particularly with anything acidic like lemon, curd or tomato.

Our glazes are lead-free and cadmium-free, so this is simply not a concern with our pieces. It is one of the first things to check whenever you buy ceramics, handmade or mass-produced. If a seller cannot tell you, treat that as your answer.

Is "food-safe" the same as "dishwasher-safe"? (No, and this trips a lot of people up)

These three terms get mixed up constantly, so here is the difference in one line each:

• Food-safe means it is safe for your food and drink to touch. This is the one that matters for health.
• Microwave-safe means you can reheat in it without damage.
• Dishwasher-safe means it can handle a dishwasher cycle.

A piece can be one, two or all three. Our everyday pieces are all three: food-safe, microwave-safe and dishwasher-safe. Knowing the difference means you never have to guess.

Are handmade mugs microwave-safe?

Ours are, for reheating and warming. The main thing to avoid with any ceramic is thermal shock, the stress caused by a sudden jump in temperature. Do not move a mug straight from the fridge into a hot microwave, and do not pour boiling water into a cold piece. Let it warm up a little first and it will serve you for years. Also avoid pieces with metallic paint or gold trim in the microwave, as metal and microwaves do not mix. Our everyday tableware is finished without metallic accents for exactly this reason.

What should I check before buying a handmade mug?

• Is the glaze described as food-safe?
• Is it lead-free and cadmium-free?
• Does the seller state whether it is microwave and dishwasher safe?
• Is the inside surface, the part that touches your drink, fully and evenly glazed?
• Can the maker actually answer these questions? A real maker always can.
